One of the patterns I see so often, in myself and in others, is the habit of postponing our return to Allah. In hardship we run to Him, but the moment ease returns we quietly forget. The Quran warns us about this pattern very clearly, and reading it always brings me back.
It’s easy to think, “I will do it soon,” but time passes, and regret often follows.
In Adversity We Reach Out, In Ease We Forget
I hear this comment often.
Everyone feels it: when we are in adversity, we all humble ourselves and reach out to Him because we know we are nothing without Him; we are so weak and helpless because God has power and control over everything.
Then when He saves us, most of the people completely forget what just happened; they go about their normal life again and completely forget about God. Most just go back and continue their ungrateful, selfish ways.
This is one of the most dangerous patterns a believer can fall into. The hardship was a gift because it drew us close, and forgetting Him once the relief came removes the very reason the trial was sent in the first place.
A Reminder From the Quran
The Quran reminds us:
“Whenever We sent a prophet to a town, We afflicted its disbelieving people with suffering and hardships, so that they might humble themselves before God. Then We changed their hardship into prosperity, until they multiplied. But they said, ‘Hardship and affluence also befell our forefathers,’ and so We took them suddenly, unawares.”
“If the people of those towns had believed and been mindful of God, We would have showered them with blessings from the heavens and the earth. But they rejected the truth, and so We punished them for their misdeeds.”
These verses hit hard. Entire towns received hardship as a call back to Allah, and when they refused, the blessings they could have received were replaced with punishment. The same choice sits in front of each of us today.
Signs and Warnings Ignored
The Quran also describes how signs and warnings were ignored:
“They were wicked, arrogant people. When a plague struck them, they said, ‘Moses, pray to your Lord for us, by virtue of the promise He has made to you. If You relieve us of this plague, we will believe you and let the children of Israel go with you.’ But when We relieved them and gave them a fixed period, they broke their promise. Because they rejected Our signs and paid no heed, We exacted retribution, drowning them in the sea.”
Making promises to Allah in hard times and breaking them when the ease arrives carries a very serious weight. This is why sincerity in worship, in both hardship and ease, matters so much.
